CHARACTER NAME & JOURNAL: Harper Gray / [personal profile] theoi
CANON: B&M native OC

BACKGROUND: World info aka Jen basically did it better than all of us combined. Anyway look at this hot, hot mess.

Personality: No bullet points for you!

Harper isn't an easy person to understand. Change has been imposed on her thorough her life, and in the process of learning how to deal with it she had had to sacrifice many things. If there is a world that covers most of Harper's life it would effectively be sacrifice.

Born as a male, and identifying as such, Harper's childhood, while present, was mostly geared to shape him into one more in line with the family tradition. Ruthless, manipulative, calculating but above all prideful, these are things that Harper has fought day after day to suppress, but that ultimately remain as core characteristics, albeit usually expressed as rage. Even from a young age, Harper found release in anger, although up until the moment he was sent to the Reformatory to train his magic he was fairly convinced about the way his family had raised him. Back then he would go as far as craving the power of being family Head. During his first years as a student the same pattern held; holding everyone in little regard, losing his temper easily. Harper has never been comfortable around people, specially those identified as "peers", first due to a sense of superiority and later due to one of alienation. At this point of his life, Harper's sacrifice manifested in his willingness to burn as many bridges as necessary to escalate in power.

It is Harper's pride that leads him to undergo the fated transformation that would leave him trapped into a female body. From that point on, Harper's gender and the way he/she related to the world would become a focal point of his/her personality. At first, Harper raged against this change; having been raised to value his identity above all, being robbed of it pushed him to the edge; losing his appearance, his magic and being forced to experience life from an opposite viewpoint (one he had never held in much regard to begin with) were close to destroy him. It is only through this suffering, through the sacrifice if his identity that Harper gains insight into what means to exist; Harper enters the final test looking to die, but as he walks out unharmed things change.

The process of accepting what happened to him reflects more obviously on Harper's decision to adopt the feminine pronoun, but inwardly it's a slower, more torturous process that involves not only learning to cope with her body, but accepting and even loving it, something that would take her the better part of the next ten years or so. Harper is ridiculously touchy when it comes to her appearance, and while she has learned to accept herself and even allow herself to experiment joy and pleasure she is slow to trust others with intimacy, specially the detail regarding her gender switch. Harper ultimately identifies as genderfluid; outwardly female, but inwardly she is both her former male self and "something else" that has been growing and evolving along the way. The topic is upsetting at best, generally infuriating and one Harper skirts around very consciously, only feeling comfortable to discuss it with people that she trusts, but most importantly those that knew her before. Even now, the idea of being rejected or seen as "less" plagues her. Despite all this, Harper loves herself, and considers that everything that has happened to her has made her a better person, but she keeps this and other realizations to herself, preferring to let her actions speak.

Harper's decision to accept her monster side, embrace her new identity and give up on the opportunity to return to her former self for good marks the moment where Harper also starts undergoing changes that relate to her new place in the world; not only as a "former dude", but also as an impossibility of nature; a hybrid of monster and witch, something that should have either turned into a tether or a monster outright, but somehow managed to find or create a middle ground for itself. It best exemplifies Harper's direct and sometimes thoughtless way to deal with problems; if something impossible is needed to be done, she will find a way, even if it requires her to go beyond her own limits.

Ever since, Harper has grown, but many things remain difficult to shake. Her default predisposition is a slightly irritated one, and her fuse is still pretty short, although this is usually geared towards those she has grown dependent of; you could say that the easiest can someone rile her up, the more she cares about them. It's a terrible way to cover her feelings for them, but Harper has grown with anger as the go to emotion to go when she doesn't know how to deal with things, and appreciation, closeness and care are ones that generally throw her out of her element. Regardless of this, Harper has an impressive moral backbone, being entirely capable of both fighting for what she believes is right and discarding it when she realizes she was wrong. Harper's beliefs of superiority have been exchanged with a firm belief that everyone deserves a second chance, perhaps reflecting how she feels about her own life. She's incapable of letting someone to their own devices, and while she retains her ruthlessness and a penchant for resolving things quickly and usually violently she treasures peace. The quiet gives her a sense of self that Harper seeks to recharge batteries, and she's known to go away on her own to find solitude and think things through. Because social interaction has always been difficult for Harper (even before her change), she puts great value into the positive relationships she manages to make, and is fiercely loyal to those she considers her friends.

While it might be easy to think of it as an overstatement, Harper has little to on prejudice; she's perfectly capable of seeing everyone for who they are and treat them accordingly. She's also completely comfortable with giving others a chance to prove themselves, specially if they are subjected to harmful stereotypes that might not apply to her. This doesn't mind Harper trusts everyone though; if anything, Harper trusts very little people, and letting others in costs her greatly. She is simply much more aware of what it takes to thrive in a world that either despises or outright rejects your existence, and therefore tries to treat everyone the same way she wishes she was treated in return. Even though she doesn't see herself as such, Harper is compassionate and understanding, capable of showing great empathy for others. The fact she continues to take praise and accolades with mild annoyance and a distinct lack work as a way to cover up for it, although whether that works or not depends mainly on the people that watch her. All in all, Harper is pretty transparent, not to mention a bad liar.

POWERS & SKILLS: Nue/Witch Hybrid. Fledgling deity.
    TIER 1:

    Witch abilities

    • Plane: Unnatural, Line: Attunement: The Gray family inheritable magic. The user can attune to someone else's energy. Regular humans find the user incredibly charismatic. Magic users find the user less charismatic, but in turn gain intuitive knowledge of their own magic they might not know yet. Monsters find the user incredibly charismatic as well, and are more agreeable to form tethers.

    • Voider (Plane: ???, Line: ???): Harper's unique brand of magic is better described as a "non-magic". While incapable of practicing any magic from any plane other than the one she has inherited, Harper can mimic the magic of others around her with ease. While she first couldn't control when/how to do so, she has grown to the point she can chose her target, and has shown aptitude at using up to three different lines at the same time. Advanced magic is more difficult to mimic and might take time to use at the same level of the original user. Harper has become capable of mimicking monsters as well, transforming into slightly weaker versions of them, taking on all their advantages and disadvantages.

    TIER 2:

    Hybrid abilities

    • Stormcaller: Harper can magically conjure electrical storms as well as disperse them, and control them to become stronger or weaker at will. Other effects such as rain, fog, strong winds take more concentration of her.

    • Lightning Travel: Harper can use lightning to transform herself into electricity and travel at high speeds through large distances, landing again with a lightning strike. She can't change her destination midway though, and it's the least stealthy way of traveling ever.

    • Lightning Travel (Mass): Same as above, but with a maximum of 10 people.

    • Electrokinesis/Electrogenensis: Harper can control and generate electricity, and is immune to its effects. She can generate enough electricity to light a small town, and can seriously injure a person, if not outright kill them.

    • Fast Healing/Regeneration: Harper's monster half allows her to heal at an increased rate; she also possesses a superior immune system and is capable of regrowing missing limbs with enough time, although the process if painful. Anything that would kill a regular person instantly will still kill her though.

    • Enhanced Senses: Harper's senses are supernaturally accurate. Sight, smell, taste, hearing, tact, balance, body position awareness and so on.

    • Enhanced Physique: Harper can bench press a maximum of 20 tons at her best. She has increased stamina, resilience, agility and speed.

    TIER 3:

    • Hybrid True Form: Harper becomes something akin to a humanoid-shaped cloud of darkness, vastly increasing her abilities yet rendering her even more vulnerable to physical damage and her particular weaknesses related to weapons made of bird parts. After using her True Form Harper loses all access to her Hybrid abilities for around two weeks.

    • Benedictions of the Goddess: Harper's limited divine powers currently allow her to perform some "low level miracles", such as healing ailments of most kinds, warding off places from evil presences and "being generally inspiring just by being around". These "miracles" belong to no actual plane, making them effective against all kind of creatures and powers, but they tax Harper's mind upon use.

INVENTORY: Her stuff yo.

MEANS OF ARRIVAL: She lives here!
